Woman & Home Short Story Competition

For the past three years, Costa has sponsored a short story competition run by Woman & Home magazine. The 2007 winner was retired teacher Jenny Steel for her story The Handyman.

The judges were bowled over by Jenny's controlled style and evocative language: 'It was so poignant and beautifully written, and it ended on such a satisfying note.'

The Handyman tells the story of Betty, who advertises for a handyman. When kind, gentle Mr Jones turns up on her doorstop he seems perfect, but Betty's daughter Stella is not convinced.

The 2008 competition was won by freelance advertising copywriter Hazel Osmond for her story One Careful Owner.

One Careful Owner provides a thought-provoking insight into the workings of a married couple, where the husband?s all-consuming interest in cars threatens the relationship.

The judges enjoyed the originality and skill demonstrated by Hazel, finding her story witty and funny.

The winner of this year's competition will be announced in next January's edition of Woman & Home magazine.
